The former Wisconsin Lutheran basketball star showed up for Earnhardt's podcast in a NASCAR T-shirt, but the conversation was nearly all hoops.

When a NASCAR legend meets an NBA rising star, the result is pure sports magic. Dale Earnhardt Jr., a Hall of Fame driver and die-hard Charlotte Hornets fan, couldn't hide his excitement as he welcomed Kon Knueppel onto his "Dale Jr. Download" podcast for an episode that dropped on May 13. The 20-year-old rookie, who narrowly missed out on the Rookie of the Year award, had the seven-time most popular driver completely starstruck.

Knueppel, a Milwaukee native who lit up the court at Wisconsin Lutheran High School before his standout season at Duke, walked into the studio sporting a T-shirt from 23XI Racing—the NASCAR team co-owned by basketball icon Michael Jordan. But here's the twist: the sharpshooter admitted he knows next to nothing about stock car racing. And that was perfectly fine, because Earnhardt was more than happy to keep the conversation firmly on the hardwood.

For a full hour, the two dove deep into the life of a young hoops star. Knueppel opened up about everything from his Milwaukee upbringing and the intense recruiting process to the art of shooting and the brutal transition from college to the pros. The rookie didn't hold back on the grueling NBA schedule, describing the relentless grind: "That first three games of the season, we had a game, day off, and then a back-to-back. It's like, OK, now we'll rest for three days. Nope, you have maybe one or two days off and then you're playing again." He added, "With all the draft prep, the combine, and Summer League, basically you're playing for a whole two years straight."

Basketball runs deep in the Knueppel family. His parents, Chari and Kon, both played college ball, and his uncle Jeff Nordgaard made a name for himself professionally after a stellar career at UW-Green Bay. The family legacy continues with Knueppel's three younger brothers and cousin Zavier Zenz, who all helped Wisconsin Lutheran capture a third straight WIAA state championship.

But the most heartwarming moment? Knueppel painted a picture of home that any sports fan would envy. "We have a full court mini hoop in the playroom," he shared with a laugh. "There was a clip of my brother trying to dunk on [6-foot-7 Hornets guard] LaMelo Ball in the playroom. Actually, the first day when I got back in the offseason, we played two-on-two in there—absolute barn ball, tackling. My dad was a little bit worried about people getting thrown through a window."

For fans looking to channel that same passion for the game—whether on the court or in the stands—this is the kind of story that reminds us why we love sports. From living rooms to NBA arenas, the love of the game starts at home.
