Bayern Munich's Champions League dream came to a heartbreaking end on Tuesday night, as a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their semi-final wasn't enough to keep them alive in the competition. The result means PSG advance to the final, but the match will be remembered as much for the controversial officiating as for the football itself.

The drama unfolded early in the first half, with two pivotal moments that left the Bayern bench fuming. First, PSG's Nuno Mendes somehow avoided a second yellow card after a tackle that had the home crowd roaring for a sending-off. Instead, the referee blew for a Bayern foul, a call that had Vincent Kompany and his staff visibly frustrated on the sidelines.

Just minutes later, things got even more contentious. PSG's João Vitinha cleared the ball, which struck teammate João Neves on the hand inside the penalty area. Bayern's players immediately appealed for a spot-kick, but VAR stayed silent—the ball had come from one PSG player to another, meaning no penalty could be awarded under the rules. The decision stung even more given that PSG were awarded a penalty in the first leg when Ousmane Dembélé's cross hit Alphonso Davies on the arm.

Speaking to Viaplay after the match, a clearly frustrated Kompany didn't hold back. "We were better in some moments, and in other moments they were better. We were at a similar level. The quality of the players will decide these types of games, but decisions too. Nothing went our way—if you look at the debatable moments, they always went against us. I saw a red card and a penalty tonight, but the referee didn't," he said.

Kompany also questioned the logic behind the handball decision. "I know the rules, and that the ball came from his own player, but come on… from 10 metres with your hand above your head?"

Despite the disappointment, the Bayern boss was gracious in defeat, acknowledging PSG's quality. "It doesn't take away from the quality of PSG. They've been one of the best teams in Europe for the last three years. We were unlucky, because we competed. Every time we face them, it feels like we're so close," Kompany said, adding that he believes his side would have won "with a little bit of luck."

For Bayern fans, it's a bitter pill to swallow—a campaign that promised so much ends in frustration, with the feeling that the football gods simply weren't on their side. As the old saying goes, sometimes it's not just about how you play, but how the calls fall. And tonight, they fell squarely against the Bavarians.
