In the aftermath of a heart-wrenching 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals, Atlético Madrid captain Koke faced the cameras with raw emotion, leaving his future at the club uncertain. The veteran midfielder, speaking to Movistar, refused to point fingers or criticize the refereeing decisions that may have swayed the tie.
"We’re really gutted, but I’m leaving here proud of the team—we gave it our all," Koke reflected, his voice heavy with disappointment. "We had chances, but the ball just wouldn’t go in; the same thing happened in the first leg. We had them on the ropes at many points, but football is about clinical finishing, and they were more clinical. They were deserved winners."
The defeat marked the end of a trophy-less season for Atlético, a campaign that saw them come agonizingly close on multiple fronts. "At the Metropolitano and here, to take the lead and then to tie it up—that’s football. You have to be decisive in both boxes," Koke added, acknowledging the fine margins that define elite competition.
Despite a solid individual performance, Koke often found himself isolated in midfield, with teammates like Llorente, Griezmann, and Julián Álvarez struggling to provide the forward options needed to break down Arsenal's resilient defense. When pressed on the referee's performance, Koke remained diplomatic: "I’m not going to comment. He probably tried his best, just as I said in the first leg. I have nothing to say."
Reflecting on the season as a whole, Koke highlighted the team's growth despite the lack of silverware. "Very exciting, especially in the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. In La Liga, we weren’t consistent; we dropped points on the road where we should have won. In the Copa del Rey, we were very close—we lost on penalties—and here we were just a hair’s breadth away from reaching the final. The squad is growing, with very young players. I’m sure that in the very near future they’ll be competing for major titles, and we’ll try to help them."
As Atlético Madrid look to rebuild and reload for next season, Koke's leadership and experience will be crucial—but for now, the captain's future remains an open question, adding an extra layer of intrigue to an already dramatic summer ahead.
