Six months ago, Kobbie Mainoo's future at Manchester United looked uncertain. Struggling for minutes and limited to brief cameo appearances, the young midfielder was heavily linked with a move away—hardly the path to becoming a club legend. This was surprising, especially considering Paul Scholes himself had said Mainoo was "ten times better than he was at 19."
But football moves fast. Under Ruben Amorim, Mainoo seemed to fall out of favor. Then came a brave decision from INEOS at the turn of the year: pulling the plug on Amorim's project at Old Trafford.
That decision turned out to be Mainoo's biggest break. Recalled to the starting lineup by interim head coach Darren Fletcher and quickly trusted with a key role by caretaker boss Michael Carrick, the 21-year-old has been nothing short of sensational. Playing in a central, controlling midfield role, he has dazzled with his composure, technical brilliance, and tactical maturity. Alongside Casemiro, he has transformed a once-concerning area of the pitch into a genuine strength.
The numbers tell the story. In the 14 league games Mainoo has started under Carrick, Manchester United have lost just once. His influence at the heart of midfield has been the foundation for the 20-time English champions' resurgence.
Now, that form has earned him a well-deserved nomination for the 2025/26 Premier League Young Player of the Season award. It's an honor with serious history at Old Trafford—Ryan Giggs (twice), David Beckham, Wayne Rooney (twice), and Cristiano Ronaldo all claimed it during their United careers.
Mainoo faces stiff competition from the likes of Rayan Cherki, Nico O'Reilly, Lewis Hall, Junior Kroupi, Alex Scott, Mateus Fernandes, and Michael Kayode. But given he has made only 14 league starts—most of them in the second half of the season—a win would be a remarkable achievement.
The Old Trafford faithful will be hoping he brings it home. And Mainoo isn't the only United player in contention, adding to the sense of pride around the club's resurgence.
