The New York Knicks will once again be without their defensive anchor, OG Anunoby, for Game 4 of their second-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday. The forward has been sidelined with a strained right hamstring and is listed as day to day.
Anunoby suffered the injury late in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, a game where he was absolutely on fire, dropping 24 points. He appeared to tweak his leg during the contest and immediately signaled to come out, heading to the locker room and never returning to the bench as the Knicks secured a 108-102 victory.
This is a tough break for a player who has been nothing short of spectacular this postseason. Anunoby is averaging 21.4 points per game while shooting an incredible 61.9% from the field and 53.8% from beyond the arc. For a team that prides itself on grit and defense, his absence is a major blow—especially considering he is widely regarded as the Knicks' top defender.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time a hamstring injury has derailed his playoff run. Two years ago, in the second round against the Indiana Pacers, Anunoby suffered a similar strain while the Knicks held a 2-0 series lead. He missed the next four games and was only able to play a few minutes in Game 7 as the Pacers mounted a stunning comeback to win the series.
Despite the setback, the Knicks currently hold a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. With a chance to close things out, New York will need to dig deep and rely on their depth to fill the void left by their versatile 6-foot-7 forward.
