The New York Knicks opened their second-round playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers with a statement win on Monday night, taking Game 1 by a commanding 137-98 score. But it wasn't all smooth sailing for the home team—foul trouble nearly derailed their game plan early on.

Facing the 76ers means preparing for a physical battle, and the referees' whistles were busy from the opening tip. Knicks big men Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson found themselves in foul trouble so quickly that head coach Mike Brown had to dig deep into his bench. Enter Ariel Hukporti—a player who barely saw meaningful minutes in the first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks—pressed into action during the first half just to keep the rotation afloat.

Joel Embiid wasted no time attacking Towns, using his signature triple-threat stance just outside the paint to draw fouls. Towns picked up two fouls before the first quarter even hit the midway mark, forcing Brown to sub in Robinson early to handle the 76ers' superstar center. By the end of the first quarter, Hukporti was needed to give Robinson a breather, leaving the Knicks' frontcourt in unfamiliar territory.

Despite the early chaos, the Knicks managed to weather the storm. Jalen Brunson took over the game, torching the 76ers' defense and helping New York build an eight-point lead by the end of the first period. Brunson was unstoppable, pouring in 27 points in the first half alone and finishing with 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting in just 31 minutes.

The foul trouble continued into the second quarter, with Towns picking up his third foul while defending Tyrese Maxey's drive with 2:40 left before halftime. Robinson also collected three fouls of his own, keeping the Knicks' frontcourt on edge. Yet, the team held strong. In the three first-half minutes Hukporti played, the Knicks were plus-10—a small but crucial cushion that kept them in control.

This Game 1 victory is a promising start, but it also serves as a cautionary tale. Brown's best lineups rely on either Towns or Robinson being on the floor. Without Towns' playmaking or Robinson's rim protection and rebounding dominance, the Knicks could easily struggle on another night. As the seventh-seeded 76ers look to bounce back and challenge the No. 2 seed, keeping the bigs out of foul trouble will be key for New York moving forward in this series.
