Been a rough go for Alec Bohm, but he responded in a big way

Alec Bohm has been under fire lately—and rightfully so. He's been one of the worst hitters in the game this season, and even we questioned whether he deserved a regular spot in the lineup. Manager Don Mattingly sat him down for two days to reset, openly wondering about his future as a starter. But tonight, Bohm was king. And the Phillies reaped the rewards.

After losing Bryce Harper early to migraines and falling behind 1-0 in the second inning on a Willi Castro home run, things looked bleak. When Aaron Nola falls behind early, it usually spells a long night. But Nola battled, giving his offense a chance to fight back. In the third inning, Bohm tied the game with one swing: a solo home run in his first at-bat after sitting out two games.

That sparked a rally. Bryson Stott and Trea Turner followed with singles, and Kyle Schwarber crushed his 14th home run of the season—a three-run blast that broke the game open. Adolis Garcia doubled, Edmundo Sosa singled, and just like that, the lead stretched to 5-1. Suddenly, this lineup looked unstoppable.

Nola gave a couple back in the fourth when Kyle Karros hit a two-run double, making it 5-3. But that was all the Rockies would get. Unlike his rough April starts, Nola settled in and kept Colorado at bay for the rest of his outing. Meanwhile, Bohm wasn't done.

A sacrifice fly from Brandon Marsh pushed the lead to 7-3, and the Phillies' bullpen took over. Tim Mayza, Tanner Banks, Chase Shugart, and Orion Kerkering combined for 4⅓ innings of hitless, walk-free baseball. They were absolutely dominant.

Then, with the game in hand, Alec Bohm drilled another ball down the line, driving in two more runs. It was officially the "Alec Bohm Game"—a night where a struggling star reminded everyone what he's capable of. For one night, at least, he was the king of the diamond.
