James Hinchcliffe believes George Russell’s strong record at the Canadian Grand Prix could halt Kimi Antonelli’s winning streak

As the Formula 1 circus rolls into Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix later this month, all eyes will be on the Mercedes garage—and the simmering rivalry between veteran George Russell and his teenage sensation teammate, Kimi Antonelli.

F1 TV presenter and former IndyCar star James Hinchcliffe has fired a warning shot at the 19-year-old Antonelli, suggesting that Russell's stellar record at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve could put a sudden halt to the young driver's impressive winning streak.

Antonelli has taken the paddock by storm in just his second F1 season. After back-to-back victories in China and Japan, the Italian prodigy now leads the championship standings. His latest win from pole position in Miami extended his advantage over Russell to a comfortable 20 points. But Hinchcliffe believes the momentum could shift dramatically on Canadian soil.

"Nothing lasts forever in Formula 1, right?" Hinchcliffe said on the F1 TV post-race show. "And we're going to a track next that we know George Russell is very competitive at. He won there last year. It'll be interesting to see how he handles it if George goes there and is able to get the momentum back on his side."

Russell's 2025 Canadian Grand Prix victory was a masterclass, while Antonelli settled for third—a result Hinchcliffe described as "not as good as first." The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has historically rewarded drivers with strong car control and bravery under braking, traits that have defined Russell's career.

But Hinchcliffe also acknowledged Antonelli's growing confidence, noting the teenager's signature victory celebration as a sign of a driver who is planning ahead. "When you're planning ahead, what's my move going to be when I win? That's a confident kid," he added.

The Canadian Grand Prix weekend runs from 22-24 May and includes a sprint race, adding another layer of strategy to what promises to be a pivotal moment in the 2026 season. For Mercedes fans, it's a chance to see whether youth or experience will prevail on the unforgiving streets of Montreal.
