The Octagon isn't just a battleground—it's also a place for unexpected moments of sportsmanship. At UFC 328, Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Strickland delivered a main event that had fight fans on the edge of their seats, but it was the interaction between Chimaev and Strickland's coach, Eric Nicksick, that stole the show.
Leading up to the fight, Strickland had built up plenty of tension with Chimaev, creating what many thought was genuine bad blood. However, once the cage door closed, that intensity seemed to dissipate. Strickland later admitted that some of the rivalry had been exaggerated, and Chimaev—despite some critics saying he lost a bit of his edge in defeat—appeared to be enjoying himself, even when things didn't go his way.
During the fight, the defending champion took a moment to exchange words with his opponent's corner. Nicksick recently revealed on The Ariel Helwani Show what was said between them. "I was telling him he ain't no boogeyman," Nicksick recalled. "I was like, 'You're no boogeyman' and he's like, 'I love you coach!' He said something else and we're going back and forth and just spit out a bunch of blood and looked over at me and I was like, 'You're a sicko, bro. I love you man.'"
Nicksick, who has always maintained a positive rapport with Chimaev, tends to stay out of the rivalries his fighter gets into. Their friendly exchange during the heat of battle was a testament to the respect that can exist even between competitors. Nicksick even plans to reach out to Chimaev just to check in, given the friendship they've built over time.
With Chimaev already vocal about wanting another shot at Strickland—despite earlier talk of leaving the division—it looks like these two teams might face off again before long. For now, this moment of mutual respect reminds us that even in the most intense fights, sportsmanship can shine through.
