Both teams battling to stay in first-half race in International League.

The Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders have reached the midway point of the first half of the International League season, and the race for first place is heating up. Currently sitting in fifth place with a 20-17 record, the RailRiders are four games behind the league-leading Memphis Redbirds (25-14). Close behind them are the Gwinnett Stripers (24-15), Louisville Bats (23-16), and Worcester Red Sox (21-16). Right on their heels are the Syracuse Mets and St. Paul Saints, both at 20-18.

While the RailRiders won't face Memphis, Gwinnett, or Louisville this season, they have a critical opportunity this week. They kicked off a series at PNC Field in northeastern Pennsylvania against the Syracuse Mets on Tuesday. After a quick road trip to face the Lehigh Valley IronPigs next week, they'll host Worcester for six games from May 26-31, followed by a seven-game series at Syracuse from June 2-7. This stretch gives the RailRiders a chance to control their own destiny—if they can take care of business and hope the top teams stumble.

This week marks the second meeting of the season between the RailRiders and Syracuse. The Mets took four of five games when the teams faced off in New York from April 14-19, so the RailRiders will be looking for redemption on home turf.

Fans can expect a showcase of top prospects in this series. Syracuse boasts Jonah Tong, the Mets' No. 1 prospect and No. 36 overall according to MLB Pipeline. The right-hander, who debuted last year, is 1-2 with a 4.46 ERA but leads the league with 52 strikeouts in just 36.1 innings. Fellow righty Jack Wenninger, the Mets' No. 5 prospect, has been dominant with a 3-1 record, a sparkling 1.27 ERA, and 31 strikeouts in 28.1 innings. Wenninger beat the RailRiders 5-3 on April 17, allowing just one run on three hits over 5.1 innings—the lone run coming on a home run by Spencer Jones, who has since been promoted.

First baseman/outfielder Ryan Clifford, acquired in the 2023 Justin Verlander trade, is the Mets' No. 3 prospect and adds pop to the lineup, batting .252 with seven home runs and 21 RBIs.

Of course, the RailRiders have their own star power, featuring the New York Yankees' top three prospects, including infielder George Lombard Jr. and a talented group of right-handed pitchers. This week's series promises high-stakes action as both teams battle to stay in the first-half race.
