Team USA's Ryder Cup campaign hit a snag before a single shot was even struck—and it all started with a text message gone wrong.
In a recent episode of Barstool's Fore Play podcast, vice captain Kevin Kisner shared a hilarious behind-the-scenes story that perfectly captures the chaos of assembling a star-studded team. When captain Keegan Bradley set up the official team group chat, there was one problem: Bryson DeChambeau didn't have an iPhone. (Sound familiar? There's always that one person.)
To his credit, DeChambeau went out and bought a new phone to stay connected with his teammates. But in a classic mix-up, he accidentally gave Bradley the wrong number. Instead of joining the Ryder Cup conversation, a complete stranger started receiving all the team's updates, strategy talk, and inside jokes.
"So some random person in America is getting all these comments from the Ryder Cup team," Kisner recalled with a laugh. "That was a hilarious start to our Ryder Cup."
The story gets even better. According to Kisner, the bewildered recipient responded with something like, "Hey, I don't know what any of this is, but good luck to y'all." When a skeptical teammate replied, "Whatever, Bryson, funny joke," the stranger insisted, "No, seriously, I don't know who these people are."
While Team USA eventually got their communication sorted, the mishap underscores the challenges of building chemistry—something Team Europe has mastered into an art form. With next year's Ryder Cup in Ireland on the horizon, new captain Jim Furyk already has his first mission: making sure everyone has the right number.
Between equipment changes and accidental group chats, it's a reminder that even the world's best golfers are human. And sometimes, that's exactly what makes the game so entertaining.
