The Detroit Tigers have made a roster move that will impact their lineup as they continue their series in Kansas City. Slugger Kerry Carpenter has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left shoulder injury, effective before Sunday's game against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

This development comes after a tough play in Saturday's 5-1 loss, where Carpenter crashed into the side wall in foul territory while chasing a ball. The misplay resulted in an inside-the-park home run for Royals star Bobby Witt Jr., and Carpenter immediately felt the effects. The 28-year-old has been a key power bat for Detroit this season, hitting .216 with six home runs and a .750 OPS across 37 games, though strikeouts have been a concern with 40 in that span. Unfortunately, this isn't new territory for Carpenter, who has dealt with injuries in each of his five MLB seasons.

To fill the roster spot, the Tigers have called up infielder Gage Workman from Triple-A Toledo. Workman is no stranger to the big leagues, already appearing in 12 games this season—nine with the Chicago Cubs and three with the Chicago White Sox. His journey back to Detroit is an interesting one: selected by the Tigers in the fourth round of the 2020 draft out of Arizona State, Workman was taken by the Cubs in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft. After a stint with the Cubs and a trade to the White Sox, he was designated for assignment and eventually returned to the Tigers when he cleared waivers.

Workman, a switch-hitter who gave up right-handed batting due to strikeout struggles, brings versatility to the infield. He's been hot in Triple-A, recently smashing a three-run triple to lead Toledo to a win. The 26-year-old will look to make an impact as the Tigers aim to snap their losing streak and stay competitive in the AL Central. As for Carpenter, his return timeline remains unclear, but Detroit will hope for a speedy recovery from their slugger.
