The Mitchell High School girls golf team came tantalizingly close to a third victory in four days, ultimately settling for a strong runner-up finish at the Yankton Invitational on Friday at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club.
In a tightly contested battle where the top three teams were separated by just five strokes, the Kernels posted a score of 343, finishing behind champion O'Gorman (340) and ahead of Brandon Valley (345). It was a fitting end to a grueling week that saw Mitchell play four events in five days, notching two wins, a third-place finish, and now this impressive second-place showing.
Anna Eliason led the charge for Mitchell, firing an even-par 80 to earn a share of fourth place among a field of 69 golfers. The depth of the Kernels' lineup was on full display as Maddie Childs (85) and Mia Larson (87) both cracked the top 10, finishing eighth and ninth respectively. Londyn Hajek rounded out the scoring with a 91, tying for 15th place. Kate Schutz (96) and Brynlee Sabers (102) also competed for Mitchell.
The individual medalist honors went to Aberdeen Central's Olivia Braun, who carded an impressive 1-over 73 to finish two strokes ahead of Brandon Valley's Vanessa Smith (75). The Golden Eagles placed fourth as a team with 358 strokes, though they were without their No. 2 golfer Kyley Wirebaugh for the second consecutive event.
O'Gorman's victory was fueled by a balanced attack, with Ari Jacobs (79) taking third place, Erin Hurd (80) tying for fourth, and Geneva Fredrickson (82) finishing sixth.
The Kernels will look to build on this momentum when they host the Mitchell Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course on Friday, May 15, with all of Class AA expected to compete.
