The 2026 Kentucky Derby just got a last-minute shake-up that has racing fans buzzing. Following the scratch of morning-line contender Fulleffort, the versatile colt Ocelli has stepped into the starting gate—and with him comes one of the most accomplished jockeys on the circuit: Tyler Gaffalione.
Gaffalione, currently ranked No. 3 in earnings among North American jockeys this year, was originally slated to ride Fulleffort in the Run for the Roses. But when that horse was scratched, the door opened for a new partnership. Now, Gaffalione takes the reins on Ocelli, replacing original jockey Joe Ramos.
Trainer Whit Beckman spoke candidly about the tough decision. "Joe Ramos has been a fantastic rider for our stable," Beckman said Friday morning at his barn. "He always is going where we want him to go. He's shown up in some really big spots for us." Beckman was quick to emphasize that the change is "not a mark" on Ramos' ability—it's simply a strategic move for the biggest stage in horse racing.
"Tyler Gaffalione is the annual leading rider here at Churchill in multiple meets," Beckman explained. "He's a guy that has been in these big spots before, finished second in the (2024) Derby with Sierra Leone, and won the Oaks. So we just decided, on this big day, after polling the ownership and taking everybody's opinion into account, that it made sense for the biggest race of the year for this horse."
Beckman also offered perspective on the nature of the sport. "I think all young riders just have to accept that when you've got this type of situation, there's gonna be—like me, I get spun by agents all the time for a better horse. That's part of the game. Just kind of the knocks you take as a young rider into molding yourself to the next level."
In another late twist, Robusta entered the Derby field after Right to Party's scratch on Friday morning. Jockey Cristian Torres got the call from trainer Doug O'Neill shortly after Robusta's entry was confirmed. This will be Torres' first appearance in the Run for the Roses—a milestone moment for the rising star.
With jockey changes shifting the dynamics of the field, the 2026 Kentucky Derby is shaping up to be a race of strategy, resilience, and fresh partnerships. Whether you're backing a seasoned veteran like Gaffalione or cheering for a first-time Derby rider, one thing is certain: the road to the roses is never predictable.
