The Kentucky Wildcats looked internationally to add to their frontcourt, but are expected to miss on their latest target.

The Kentucky Wildcats and head coach Mark Pope are in a race against the clock to finalize their 2026-27 roster, and the latest update isn't promising. With three scholarships still open, the team is desperately seeking both a scoring boost and frontcourt depth—especially if center Malachi Moreno opts to stay in the NBA draft. That second need just became even more urgent.

In an effort to address the gap, Pope recently traveled overseas to scout Marcios Santos, a 6'8" forward for Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Euroleague. Santos has been turning heads with his ability to score, rebound, and knock down 40% of his three-point attempts—a skill set that seems tailor-made for Kentucky's offensive system under Pope. For a moment, it looked like Santos might be the answer.

But the script has flipped. Reports now indicate that Santos is expected to choose the LSU Tigers, lured by a more lucrative offer. If that happens, it would be another tough miss for Pope and the Wildcats, adding to a growing list of near-misses in the transfer portal.

While there's still hope—Milan Momcilovic could pull out of the draft and head to Lexington, and a few other portal options remain—time is running out. The pool of game-changing players is shrinking fast, and the pressure is mounting. For Pope and Kentucky, it's desperation mode as the season inches closer.
