LEXINGTON — The Kentucky Wildcats are building something special for the 2026-27 season, and head coach Mark Pope is working overtime to piece together a roster that could make some serious noise in the SEC. As we hit the midpoint of May, the Big Blue Nation has plenty to get excited about, though the coaching staff still has a few puzzle pieces to fit together.
As of May 11, Kentucky has filled 13 of its 15 available scholarships for next season, leaving just a couple of slots open for the right additions. The biggest question mark? Rising sophomore center Malachi Moreno. The big man announced on April 6 that he'd test the NBA draft waters while keeping his college eligibility intact, but if he decides to return, he's made it clear he'll be back in a Wildcats uniform. According to Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor, Moreno has been drawing interest from teams in the mid-to-late first round range, so all eyes will be on the May 27 deadline to withdraw from the draft at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Beyond the Moreno drama, Kentucky is bringing back four familiar faces from last season's squad: forwards Braydon Hawthorne, Trent Noah, and Reece Potter, along with guard Kam Williams. That core of returning talent gives Pope a solid foundation to build around.
The new blood is where things get really interesting. The Wildcats are welcoming a pair of high school signees in Zyon Hawthorne and Mason Williams, plus an international big man from Senegal in Ousmane N'Diaye. But the transfer portal has been the real goldmine this offseason. Pope and his staff have landed five portal additions: three backcourt players in Zoom Diallo, Jerone Morton, and Alex Wilkins, plus two frontcourt reinforcements in Franck Kepnang and Justin McBride.
Of course, roster turnover is a reality in modern college basketball, and six players from last season's team have moved on via the transfer portal: Collin Chandler, Mouhamed Dioubate, Brandon Garrison, Andrija Jelavić, Jasper Johnson, and Jaland Lowe. Two seniors from the 2025-26 club, Denzel Aberdeen and Otega Oweh, have exhausted their eligibility, though Aberdeen has entered the portal despite needing an NCAA waiver to play next season.
One name to keep an eye on: forward Braydon Hawthorne, who redshirted during the 2025-26 campaign but announced on April 21 that he'll be back in blue next season as a redshirt freshman. And don't forget about Trent Noah, the Harlan High superstar who announced on April 12 that he'll return for his junior campaign. For a team that's always looking for that next breakout star, Noah's continued development could be a major storyline.
