It's still early in the offseason, and Kentucky Basketball's roster isn't fully set yet, but the early national projections for Mark Pope's critical third season in Lexington aren't exactly glowing.

ESPN's Jeff Borzello dropped his Way-Too-Early Top 25, and the Wildcats didn't just miss the cut—they didn't even crack the "next five out" list. That's a tough pill to swallow for a program with Kentucky's pedigree, especially with Florida landing at No. 1, followed by Duke, Michigan, Illinois, and UConn rounding out the top five.

The SEC is shaping up to be a gauntlet once again, with six teams landing inside Borzello's top 15. Louisville, for example, snagged the No. 15 spot—and that was before they landed Obinna Ekezie Jr., one of the top freshmen in the class. The conference is only getting deeper.

But don't count the Wildcats out just yet. There are some intriguing pieces in place. Guards Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins have the talent to truly blossom in Lexington, and if Malachi Moreno decides to pull his name from the NBA Draft, he'd be a massive anchor for this squad. Then there's Ousmane N'Diaye, a 6'11" forward from Senegal with raw potential that Pope could mold into something special.

Kentucky's ceiling, however, hinges on the development of Kam Williams and Braydon Hawthorne. Williams flashed serious promise last season before a mid-season foot injury sidetracked his momentum—fans never got to see his full arsenal over a full campaign. Hawthorne, meanwhile, might be the biggest wild card on the roster. He was a top-35 recruit in last year's class, so the potential is there, but he remains something of a mystery as a returning player.

The roster likely isn't finished yet. Another international addition wouldn't be a surprise, but even so, don't be shocked if Kentucky starts the season outside the top 25. For a program used to being in the conversation, this is a humbling reminder that the rebuild is still very much a work in progress.
