ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins has stirred up the NBA conversation with a bold take on Joel Embiid's future with the Philadelphia 76ers. During a recent appearance on First Take, Perkins didn't hold back, suggesting it's time for the superstar center and the franchise to part ways.

"As far as Joel Embiid, this relationship has run its course," Perkins said. "It's time for both parties to separate. I think it would be in the best interest of the organization, and it would also be in the best interest for Joel Embiid. I believe Joel Embiid needs a change of scenery. I believe Joel Embiid needs a breath of fresh air."

The timing of Perkins' comments is no coincidence. The 76ers were just swept by the New York Knicks in the second round of the playoffs—a disappointing end to a season that once held so much promise. Embiid, now in his 10th season with the franchise, has been the heart of the team, but the results haven't matched the expectations.

Injuries have been a recurring theme for the 2023 MVP. This season alone, Embiid was limited to just 38 games. When he did suit up, he was nothing short of spectacular, averaging 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. But those numbers haven't translated into deep playoff success. The 76ers have never made it past the Eastern Conference Finals during his tenure, leaving fans and analysts questioning whether the current formula works.

Adding to the complexity is Embiid's massive contract. According to Spotrac, the 32-year-old is owed $57.9 million next season—the first year of a three-year, $192.9 million extension he signed in September 2024. That's a hefty price tag for a player with an injury history and a team that hasn't been able to get over the hump.

After the sweep, Embiid himself acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the team's future. "I don't know who's going to be here," he said. "I don't even know if I'm going to be here, but whatever happens, happens. But for me, I'm excited about really getting back to myself."

With the offseason now underway, the 76ers front office faces a pivotal decision. Moving on from Embiid would be a seismic shift, but it might be the shake-up both sides need. For now, the NBA world waits to see if Philadelphia will pull the trigger on one of the biggest trades in recent memory.
