The San Antonio Spurs suffered a surprising 104-102 defeat in Game 1 on Monday. The result immediately shifted the tone of a series they were expected to control.

The San Antonio Spurs entered Game 1 of their Western Conference series as heavy favorites, but a stunning 104-102 loss on Monday has already flipped the script. What was supposed to be a controlled march toward the conference finals now feels like a high-wire act—and former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins isn't mincing words about what could happen next.

Perkins, known for his unfiltered takes on ESPN's First Take, warned that the Spurs are staring down a potential sweep if they don't correct course fast. "I'm telling you right now, if the San Antonio Spurs don't get Game 2 in a must-win situation, they're gonna get swept," he said, doubling down on his belief that the Minnesota Timberwolves are playing with serious intent. "This team means business. I know it when I see it."

Not everyone is buying the doom-and-gloom forecast. Stephen A. Smith fired back, dismissing the sweep talk as overblown and even joking that Perkins should be "drug-tested." After all, the Spurs are the No. 2 seed in the West—hardly a team that folds easily.

San Antonio's Game 1 struggles were rooted in an uncharacteristically flat offensive performance. Dylan Harper led the way with 18 points, but that modest total highlighted a bigger problem: no one seized control when it mattered most. Even Victor Wembanyama, the rookie phenom who has redefined postseason expectations, managed just 11 points—well below his usual impact.

Still, history offers a lifeline. The Spurs dropped Game 2 to the Trail Blazers in the first round earlier this playoffs, only to roar back with two road wins. That resilience is exactly what they'll need to channel as Game 2 looms. For a team built on composure and depth, the next 48 minutes could define their entire season.
