When you think of the Indiana Fever's backcourt, Caitlin Clark naturally grabs the headlines. But two games into the 2026 season, Kelsey Mitchell is delivering a loud reminder that she remains one of the WNBA's most electrifying scorers—and she's doing it in historic fashion.

Mitchell opened the season with a blistering 30-point performance against the Dallas Wings, then followed it up with 23 points in Tuesday night's victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. That gives her 53 total points through the Fever's first two games—the most by any player in franchise history over that span. For a team with championship aspirations, that kind of firepower is exactly what they need.

What makes Mitchell's start so impressive is that she hasn't even fully found her rhythm from deep yet. Instead, she's been a master of versatility: attacking the rim, pulling up in the mid-range, scoring in transition, and creating shots when the shot clock is winding down. She's become the safety valve Indiana can count on when the offense needs a reset.

That reliability was especially crucial against the Sparks, as Aliyah Boston found herself in early foul trouble and never got into an offensive flow. Fever head coach Stephanie White didn't mince words about the officiating affecting Boston's night. "You think it was LA?" White said when asked about Boston's lack of touches. "I think it was foul trouble. She didn't really get a chance, and it's hard to get into a flow when you're getting called for all these quote-unquote fouls."

With Boston sidelined and the game turning more physical, Mitchell stepped up as the consistent offensive engine Indiana needed. While Clark finished with 24 points and controlled the tempo, it was Mitchell's shot creation that kept the Fever afloat during the toughest stretches.

For Fever fans, the message is clear: this team has two legitimate scoring threats who can take over any game. And if Mitchell is already rewriting franchise records before her outside shot even heats up, the rest of the league should be on notice.
