In the fast-paced world of MotoGP, the VR46 Ducati team is making it crystal clear: keeping their star rider Fabio di Giannantonio is the ultimate goal. Team director Alessio "Uccio" Salucci recently sat down for an exclusive interview and laid out the team's roadmap for the upcoming season, revealing that retaining "Diggia" to pair with incoming talent Fermin Aldeguer is very much "Plan A."
While Aldeguer's move to VR46 for 2027 is an open secret awaiting official confirmation, di Giannantonio has been turning heads with a blistering start to the current season. After a stunning third-place finish at the Spanish Grand Prix, he admitted the buzz around him is hard to ignore. "We're doing a really good job on track, and it reflects for the future—a lot of teams want me on their side," he said. "This is amazing, as a human before a rider. It means you're doing a good job. We still have everything open, honestly, and I'm pleased about the interest."
Salucci, however, is determined not to let his star slip away. Reflecting on di Giannantonio's journey, he shared, "I remember two years ago when we signed him—there wasn't much interest. We believed in him, and now he's a hot property. That makes me very happy. But it also makes things more complicated. He's our priority, and we're building an offer that matches the di Giannantonio of today—both technically and financially. We hope he chooses to stay with us for the coming years."
But as any seasoned team boss knows, in MotoGP, you always need a backup plan. Salucci was candid about the alternatives if di Giannantonio decides to move on. "Everything is possible," he said. "We have a Plan B, C, and D. Diggia is our priority, and I'd be disappointed to move to Plan B, but in this sport, you always need alternatives."
So, who could step in? The list is intriguing. Salucci didn't rule out retaining Franco Morbidelli, despite his recent struggles. "We're working a lot with him," he noted. Luca Marini is another option, though his future at Honda remains uncertain. And for a touch of homegrown talent, Salucci tipped his hat to Moto2 standout Celestino Vietti, calling him "close to my heart." Even a wildcard from World Superbike wasn't off the table.
For now, all eyes are on di Giannantonio as he rides the wave of interest and success. Whether he stays or goes, VR46 is ready to pivot—but the message is clear: Plan A is still very much in play.
