The Golden State Valkyries' foundation just got stronger. Kayla Thornton, the heart and soul of the expansion team's inaugural season, has re-signed with the franchise on a one-year deal, ensuring her leadership and elite play return to the Bay.
This move comes on the heels of a monumental year for the veteran forward. After winning a WNBA championship with the New York Liberty, Thornton was selected by the Valkyries in the expansion draft and immediately became their cornerstone. She didn't just fill a roster spot; she made history, earning the team's first-ever All-Star selection with a career-best campaign, averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds.
Thornton's impact was undeniable, leading the team in minutes and setting the standard for a new franchise before a knee injury cut her season short in July. Her resilience was on full display this spring, as she recovered in time to earn her first-ever invitation to a USA Basketball Women’s National Team training camp—a testament to her dedication and skill.
"Kayla had an extraordinary season for this franchise and for herself," said Valkyries general manager Ohemaa Nyanin. "She became our first-ever All-Star and stepped up as a leader from day one. She brings a relentless work ethic and an unshakeable belief in this team."
This signing is a major win for the Valkyries' culture. Thornton's journey—from a record-setting career at UTEP, where she remains the program's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, to a WNBA champion and All-Star—epitomizes the grit and perseverance that defines the league. Her jersey retirements at both UTEP and her hometown Irvin High School speak to a legacy that continues to grow.
For Valkyries fans, Thornton's return signals stability and ambition. Her presence ensures the team builds on its promising start with a proven winner who embodies the competitive spirit at the highest level of the game.
