History is about to be made in the world of motorsports. Katherine Legge, a trailblazer on and off the track, has announced she will attempt "The Double" in 2026—racing in both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. This marks the first time a woman has ever taken on this grueling challenge.
Legge, who will pilot the No. 11 Chevrolet for HMD Motorsports with AJ Foyt Racing at Indy, will also strap into the No. 78 Chevrolet for Live Fast Motorsports at Charlotte Motor Speedway. She recently gained valuable seat time in that same car during NASCAR's Go Bowling at The Glen, finishing 35th. Her primary sponsor for both events will be e.l.f. Cosmetics, a brand known for championing bold moves and breaking barriers.
"Very few drivers ever get the opportunity to attempt 'The Double,' and I do not take that opportunity lightly," Legge said. "This challenge is about pushing through perceived limits, betting on yourself, taking risks, and trying to do something unique."
The Double is one of motorsports' ultimate endurance tests, requiring drivers to compete in the Indianapolis 500 in the afternoon before flying to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the Coca-Cola 600 that evening. The feat has only been attempted by a handful of drivers: John Andretti (1994), Robby Gordon (2000, 2002-04), Tony Stewart (1999, 2001), Kurt Busch (2014), and Kyle Larson (2024-25). Stewart remains the only driver to complete all 1,100 miles and 600 laps, a feat he achieved in 2001.
Larson attempted the Double in each of the past two years with Arrow McLaren. In 2024, a four-hour rain delay at Indy kept him from making it to Charlotte. Last year, crashes in both races ended his bid early. Legge, who will be making her fifth Indy 500 start, sees this as a chance to inspire others and prove that limits are meant to be tested.
"I don't think it's off the table," Legge told IndyStar last year when asked about the possibility. Now, with the announcement official, she's ready to write her own chapter in racing history. Whether she's conquering the Brickyard or the high banks of Charlotte, one thing is certain: Katherine Legge is racing for more than just a finish line.
