Katherine Legge is ready to trade sleep for a shot at motorsport history. The 45-year-old British racing veteran has finalized a last-minute deal to attempt "The Double" — racing in both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Her response to the monumental challenge? A simple, confident: "Why not?"
Legge will drive the No. 11 Chevrolet for HMD Motorsports/AJ Foyt Racing in the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 24 before racing across the country to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR's longest points race, with Live Fast Motorsports. It's a grueling schedule that will test both endurance and logistics, but Legge sees it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. "It's been a couple of years in the making," she says. "I knew at some point it would be something we looked at doing. But I didn't anticipate it being this year. It might be the only opportunity I get."
If Legge takes the green flag in both races, she'll join an elite club of just five drivers who have previously accomplished the feat: John Andretti, Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, and Kyle Larson. Each of those drivers brought a unique blend of versatility and grit to the challenge, and Legge — a seasoned competitor in open-wheel and sports car racing — is eager to add her name to that list.
For fans and gear enthusiasts alike, Legge's Double attempt is a reminder of the incredible demands placed on drivers who dare to conquer both IndyCar and NASCAR in a single day. It's a testament to the spirit of racing — and the kind of determination that looks great on a race-day tee.
