Martin is right back in the league.

Kate Martin isn't staying on the free agent market for long. Just days after the Golden State Valkyries parted ways with the former Iowa standout, the guard has already landed a new opportunity in the WNBA.

Martin signed a developmental contract with the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday, giving her an immediate path back into the league. In the WNBA, a developmental deal works similarly to a two-way contract in the NBA—it allows a player to be on the active roster for up to 12 regular-season games while practicing and traveling with the team full-time. It's a strategic move for the Sparks, essentially a way to keep a player they like on the roster without committing to a standard 12-player spot right away. If Martin impresses, she can be signed to a standard contract as the season progresses.

This marks the third WNBA team in three seasons for Martin, who entered the league as the No. 18 overall pick by the Las Vegas Aces in 2024. During her rookie year, she averaged 2.6 points per game while learning from one of the league's premier franchises. The Valkyries then selected her in the expansion draft, where she saw her production jump to 6.2 points per game for Golden State. Now with the Sparks, the challenge is clear: prove she deserves a permanent spot and carve out meaningful playing time.

Martin's journey has been closely watched since her college days alongside Caitlin Clark at Iowa, where the duo helped elevate women's basketball to new heights. While Clark continues to set records—including two all-time WNBA marks on a single spinning bucket—Martin is carving her own path, showing the resilience that defines a true competitor.
