After being waived earlier this week by the Golden State Valkyries, former Iowa women's basketball star Kate Martin has joined a new WNBA team.

Kate Martin's WNBA journey continues with a fresh start in Los Angeles. The former Iowa women's basketball standout, who was waived by the Golden State Valkyries earlier this week, has signed a player development contract with the Los Angeles Sparks, marking the third stop of her professional career.

This unique deal, made possible by the newly updated collective bargaining agreement, allows teams to carry two developmental roster spots outside the salary cap. It's a smart move for both sides—Martin gets to train, receive benefits, and potentially suit up for up to 12 games, while the Sparks build depth and invest in talent for the future.

Martin, drafted 18th overall by the Las Vegas Aces in 2024, has already shown she belongs on the big stage. Over 76 career games (six starts), she's averaged 4.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 0.9 assists in about 14 minutes per game, shooting 31.9% from the field and 32.1% from beyond the arc. Her free-throw accuracy stands at an impressive 81.1%.

Sparks General Manager Raegan Pebley couldn't hide her excitement: "Kate is a gifted shooter, whose grittiness and winning history mesh well with Sparks basketball. She's confident in her shot, plays tenacious defense, and is an unselfish, high-energy teammate. We're eager to watch Kate develop within our system."

Her college résumé speaks volumes. Across five seasons at Iowa (thanks to the COVID-19 eligibility extension), Martin started 139 of 163 games, averaging 8.0 points on 46.4% shooting, 35.5% from three, and 82.4% from the free-throw line. She also pulled down 4.6 rebounds and dished out 2.9 assists per game, proving she's a versatile, high-IQ player who thrives under pressure.

As for her departure from Golden State, Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase acknowledged it was a tough call but necessary to maximize the team's potential. Now, Martin brings her relentless energy and championship mindset to a Sparks squad eager to build something special.
