It did not take long for Kate Martin to find a new team. The former Hawkeye was waived by the Golden State Valkyries despite playing a key part in their playoff run.

Kate Martin wiped away tears as she faced the media, her voice cracking with emotion. "It was brutal," she admitted, pausing to compose herself before continuing. The former Iowa Hawkeye had just been waived by the Golden State Valkyries—a team she helped push through a playoff run—and the sting was still fresh.

But in the fast-paced world of professional basketball, opportunities come as quickly as they go. Just days after the Valkyries made the tough call, Martin found a new home with the Los Angeles Sparks on a developmental contract. While it's not the guaranteed rotation spot she had in Golden State, the deal allows her to suit up for up to 12 games and step into the active roster if injuries strike. For Martin, it's a chance to prove her grit and stay in the league.

"It was a business decision," she said, fighting back more tears. "That's what professional sports is. It's a business. It wasn't an easy process, and now I feel like I can relate to a lot more people on a level I never wanted to be able to relate on. But it's going to help me as a leader and a person going forward."

Martin's journey has been anything but typical. As a rookie with the Las Vegas Aces in 2024, she played 34 games off the bench under legendary coach Becky Hammon, never once experiencing the sting of being cut. Over two seasons, she's appeared in 76 games (six starts), averaging 4.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 0.9 assists in just over 14 minutes per game—solid numbers for a player finding her footing in the WNBA.

Hammon, who knows a thing or two about resilience, wasn't surprised Martin landed on her feet. "She's great in the locker room, a great teammate, and a super hard worker," Hammon said. "She's somebody who came in with pro habits, and a lot of times that's hard to do coming from college, but she came in and was a nice piece for us."

Now, as Martin pulls on a Sparks jersey, she carries those lessons—and a few tears—into a new chapter. For fans who love the game's raw emotion and grit, her story is a reminder that every setback is just a setup for a comeback.
