When you're a two-time ACC champion and former WNBA All-Star, you can add just about anything to your resume—including "Siren Sounder" for an NHL playoff game.

Duke women's basketball head coach Kara Lawson took center ice at PNC Arena on Saturday night, earning the honor of cranking the iconic hurricane warning siren before Game 1 of the Carolina Hurricanes' second-round series against the Philadelphia Flyers. It's a tradition that's been alive since the 2008-09 season, where a celebrity, season ticket holder, or corporate partner gets to fire up the crowd by hand-cranking the siren from the 200 level as the team hits the ice.

Lawson is far from the first Blue Devil to take on this role. Last season, both men's basketball coach Jon Scheyer and football head coach Manny Diaz sounded the siren during the Hurricanes' run to the Eastern Conference Finals. But here's where the story gets interesting—those earlier appearances came with some bad luck, as both games ended in losses for Carolina, including an elimination loss to the Florida Panthers when Scheyer was on duty.

Fortunately for Hurricanes fans, that Blue Devil curse didn't follow Lawson down Tobacco Road. Carolina dominated the Flyers with a commanding 3-0 shutout, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Now, the reigning ACC Coach of the Year heads back to Durham, where she's busy building her 2026-27 roster. With two straight conference titles already on the shelf and that playoff victory soundtrack ringing in her ears, Lawson is proving that winning—whether on the hardwood or behind the siren—is just part of her game.
