Hopefully his velocity is back up.

The Kansas City Royals are inching closer to getting a key bullpen arm back, as right-handed pitcher Carlos Estévez is set to begin a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers. The news comes as a welcome development for a team looking to solidify its late-inning relief options early in the season.

Estévez, who was placed on the injured list on April 1 with a foot contusion, suffered the injury after being hit by a line drive during the season-opening series against the Atlanta Braves. Since then, he's been working his way back, completing three live batting practice sessions at the team's spring training facility in Arizona. Royals manager Matt Quatraro confirmed the update to reporters, signaling that the 29-year-old is ready for game action.

While the timeline for his return is promising, the Royals are keeping a close eye on his performance metrics. General manager J.J. Picollo noted that Estévez's velocity has been sitting in the 92-93 mph range during his live BP sessions—a solid foundation, but still below his typical high-90s heat. "We anticipate, when he gets under the lights in a game situation, we'll probably see a little bit more," Picollo explained. "There will be better adrenaline than a live BP." However, he also emphasized that command will be just as critical as velocity. "You put two things together with velocity that's below the norm and command that's below his norm, it's a tough way to survive."

Estévez's rehab assignment begins Tuesday on the road against Indianapolis, and if all goes well, he could be back in the Royals' bullpen soon—bringing both experience and a power arm to a unit that thrives on consistency.
