Juventus were counting on two major cash injections this summer, but those paydays have hit a snag. Douglas Luiz and Nico Gonzalez were expected to trigger permanent moves to Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid, respectively, but neither deal will go through automatically, leaving the Bianconeri scrambling for a new game plan.
The club had hoped to bank nearly €60 million from the duo. However, Douglas Luiz's return to Birmingham hasn't gone as planned. After a lackluster stint at Nottingham Forest, the Brazilian midfielder has struggled to secure a regular starting spot, and his €25 million buy option will now expire. It's a tough blow for Juventus, who saw little return on their investment.
Nico Gonzalez has fared better during his loan spell with Atletico Madrid, but even his €32 million permanent exit clause remains unfulfilled. The Argentine winger has missed several matches due to injury in the second half of the season and is currently recovering. With 5 goals in 37 appearances for Los Colchoneros, his contributions have been solid but not enough to trigger automatic purchase.
There's still hope for both players to stay put, but only after renegotiated terms. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Atletico Madrid are willing to pay around €20 million for Gonzalez—a discount from the original price. The bigger challenge lies with Douglas Luiz. Carrying a residual financial value of €30 million and earning €5 million per year, the midfielder is proving tough to offload.
Juventus face a difficult decision on Luiz. While he didn't replicate his Fiorentina form and has been somewhat injury-prone, he wasn't terrible during his time in Turin. If no suitable offers emerge, the club might keep him rather than take a loss. Meanwhile, the Bianconeri are eyeing reinforcements elsewhere. With Edon Zhegrova contributing little, they'll need another winger, and midfield depth is also a priority. But turning Douglas Luiz into a true asset will require significant effort this summer.
