Detroit Tigers fans hoping for a Justin Verlander sighting at Fenway Park this weekend will have to wait. The veteran right-hander, sidelined with left hip inflammation, did not travel with the team to Boston as originally planned.
Manager A.J. Hinch clarified that while this change in plans isn't a major setback, the team is prioritizing Verlander's full recovery. The 43-year-old future Hall of Famer was slated to throw a bullpen session during the series, but those plans were also scrapped. "We're just listening to his symptoms," Hinch stated. "We're not going to put him out there until he can complete the full return-to-play cycle."
Hinch emphasized the injury's severity hasn't increased, calling it "relatively minor" but "significant enough to mean he can't pitch." The Tigers will reassess Verlander's status when they return to Comerica Park on Tuesday.
In the meantime, the rotation has held strong, ranking 10th in MLB with a 3.49 ERA. A key part of that success has been 25-year-old Keider Montero, who has stepped up admirably with a 3.31 ERA and 15 strikeouts over 16.1 innings in three starts. His performance is a bright spot as the Tigers navigate the early season without their ace.
For now, the team and its fans must exercise patience, waiting for the day Verlander can confidently resume his place on the mound.
