Justin Thomas has never been shy about his admiration for Rory McIlroy, and during Friday's Truist Championship, he made a bold claim that perfectly captures just how special the Northern Irishman truly is.
When Thomas burst onto the PGA Tour in 2015, McIlroy was already a four-time major champion. Fast forward to today, and both players have added two more majors to their resumes — Thomas with two PGA Championships, McIlroy with two Masters titles. But in Thomas's eyes, there's still a clear gap between the six-time major champion and the rest of the field.
Speaking from the Sky Sports commentary booth on day two at Quail Hollow, Thomas couldn't help but marvel at a shot McIlroy hit on the par-five 15th hole. The drive traveled an astonishing 332 yards, splitting the fairway with effortless power.
"It is one of those things that a lot of people and media, whatever, said once he does win, he could win a lot of these," Thomas said, referencing McIlroy's recent Masters triumph. "And I mean, look where he just drove it there (on the 15th at Quail Hollow). Like, I don't think anybody else is driving that there on 15 this week."
The 32-year-old American went on to explain what sets McIlroy apart: "He does unbelievable stuff with a golf ball. It's impressive to watch, and I've always respected the kind of person he is. He's been great to me."
For golf fans, moments like these remind us why McIlroy's game is so captivating. Whether it's a high draw that flies 320-330 yards in the air or a perfectly placed drive at Quail Hollow, his ability to do things no one else can is what makes him a generational talent. And when a player of Thomas's caliber says it, you know it's more than just hype.
