Justin Rose is fighting to keep his PGA Championship hopes alive after a frustrating second round at Aronimink on Friday. The Englishman carded a three-over 73, following an even-par 70 on Thursday, leaving him at three-over for the tournament—right on the cut line as conditions shifted throughout the day.
Chasing his second career major title, Rose showed a glimmer of brilliance by holing out for eagle from distance on the 18th hole, giving himself a fighting chance to make the weekend. But his overall performance has been a struggle, with his irons drawing attention after he made a significant equipment change just two weeks ago.
Rose put new McLaren irons in his bag ahead of the Cadillac Championship, a move that has sparked conversation. However, he insists the irons aren't the issue. "That is the best part of my game at the minute!" he told Sky Sports Golf after his round. "Putting has been hit and miss—I have holed some good putts but not enough. Unfortunately, I am just not putting the ball in play off the tee at the minute."
The 2013 U.S. Open champion admitted his driving has been the primary culprit. "I have been hitting everything right off the tee, not being able to stay in posture or stay in my shots. I am losing everything to the right, no start line or club face control. It has been a bit of a struggle out there, for sure."
Despite the frustration, Rose remains optimistic about his chances. "Oh my God, two more days of that! No, obviously it is a good opportunity to go and find something. I feel like there is a score to be had out there. It's a course I have played well in the past, it fits my eye, I like it. If I can go and post two good rounds on the weekend, it's been such a fun leaderboard. So many guys are within two or three shots of the lead."
Rose's equipment change has been a long-term plan, and he's confident he can turn things around. "It's been an area of my game which has created some attention, but it has been part of my plan for a long, long time." For fans watching his journey, every shot this weekend could be the start of a remarkable comeback.
