Justin Gaethje thinks Ilia Topuria shouldn’t be getting so emotional with guys like Josh Hokit

The UFC White House press conference was supposed to be a routine promotional event—until Josh Hokit decided to stir the pot. The heavyweight contender, set to face Derrick Lewis at the upcoming card, launched into a trash-talking session aimed at Alex Pereira. But it was Ilia Topuria, seated next to Pereira, who took the bait. Things escalated quickly, with Topuria nearly coming to blows with Hokit before security stepped in.

Justin Gaethje, watching from a distance, had a front-row seat to the drama—and he didn't like what he saw. "It's funny because he's very emotional," Gaethje said in a recent YouTube video, referring to his future opponent. "That was good to see. He got emotional. Although I do get emotional defending my friends, as well. But you can't let another man control you like that! Never."

For Gaethje, the incident was more than just a heated moment. It was a glimpse into Topuria's mindset ahead of their lightweight title clash next month. Topuria, undefeated in MMA and ranked No. 2 pound-for-pound in the world, enters the fight as a heavy betting favorite. But Gaethje, fighting for what could be his last shot at undisputed UFC gold, isn't backing down.

Drawing on a bit of American history for inspiration, Gaethje framed his underdog status in patriotic terms. "July 4, 1776, we had to be at least 50-to-1 dogs," he said. "So 5-to-1? I feel lucky being only 5-to-1. And we've been thriving since. So, I'm here to write the same story."

With the fight set to headline UFC White House on the 250th anniversary of American independence, Gaethje is embracing the role of the underdog. But if Topuria's emotional outburst is any indication, the champion may have more on his mind than just the belt.
