Manchester United have been dealt another significant setback as defender Matthijs de Ligt has undergone back surgery, ruling him out for an additional three months.

The Dutch centre-back, signed by former manager Erik ten Hag, had started the season in impressive form, quickly establishing himself as a key figure in Ruben Amorim's defensive setup. His commanding performances at the heart of United's backline had fans optimistic about the campaign ahead.

However, the 26-year-old's promising run came to an abrupt halt in November when he sustained a back injury. Initially, the issue was not considered serious, with expectations of a swift recovery. But what was thought to be a short-term absence has now stretched into a six-month ordeal, leaving supporters increasingly concerned.

De Ligt had been making gradual progress in his rehabilitation, recently returning to grass training—though he continued working individually rather than with the first-team squad. The hope was that he was nearing a return.

That optimism took a hit on Friday when Samuel Luckhurst, Manchester United correspondent for The Sun, broke the news that the defender had gone under the knife. According to club sources, the surgery was successful, but the recovery timeline is a tough pill to swallow: De Ligt is expected to be sidelined for another three months, meaning his total absence from competitive action could stretch to nine months.

For United, this is a frustrating blow as they navigate a challenging season. With De Ligt's leadership and defensive prowess sorely missed, the club will be hoping his rehabilitation proceeds without further complications. Fans will be counting down the days until the Dutchman can once again don the red shirt.
