Journeyman quarterback Taylor Heinicke, whose improbable NFL journey made him a beloved figure in Washington, has officially called it a career. The 33-year-old signal-caller announced his retirement via social media on Thursday, thanking fans and teammates for supporting him through seven seasons in the league.
Heinicke's path to the NFL was anything but ordinary. After going undrafted out of Old Dominion, he bounced around with the Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, and Los Angeles Chargers. But it was his time in Washington that truly defined his legacy.
His breakout moment came in December 2020, when he was signed to Washington's practice squad as a COVID-19 emergency option. At the time, Heinicke was sleeping on his sister's couch in Atlanta and taking online classes to finish his degree. He had last played in the XFL in 2019. Just a month later, he was thrust into the spotlight, starting a playoff game against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Heinicke threw for 306 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score in a 31-23 loss, instantly becoming a fan favorite for his gritty, fearless play.
That performance earned him a full-time role in 2021, where he went 7-8 as a starter over 15 games. While his numbers weren't flashy—6,969 passing yards, 40 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions across 30 career starts—his heart and hustle made him a cult hero. He also rushed for three touchdowns during his career.
"Many ups and downs throughout the years, but the ups outweigh the downs tenfold," Heinicke wrote in his farewell message. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would've been able to live this life. … Excited for this next chapter of my life."
After leaving Washington, Heinicke spent one season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023 and another with the Chargers in 2024. He appeared in four games for Los Angeles, attempting just five passes before being released last August. He remained unsigned this season, ultimately deciding to hang up his cleats. For a quarterback who once seemed destined to be a footnote, Heinicke's story is a reminder that in the NFL, sometimes the most memorable moments come from the most unexpected places.
