Texas Rangers infielder Josh Smith has been sidelined by a serious health issue, as he's been diagnosed with viral meningitis and hospitalized. The 26-year-old is expected to remain in the hospital for 7 to 10 days, but the good news is that viral meningitis is generally less severe than bacterial forms.

Smith had already been on the injured list with a glute strain, but this new setback will keep him away from the diamond even longer. Once discharged, he'll need to gradually work his way back to game-ready condition. It's a tough break for a player who stepped up as the team's starting second baseman this season, filling in for Marcus Semien.

For those unfamiliar, viral meningitis causes inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. While it sounds alarming, it's typically much more benign than bacterial meningitis, which can be deadly. Most patients recover fully with rest and supportive care.

In Smith's absence, the Rangers are turning to Ezequiel Duran to handle the bulk of the workload at second base. Duran has already been seeing regular playing time and will look to keep the infield steady while Smith focuses on his recovery.

We're sending our best wishes to Smith for a speedy and full recovery. From the field to the hospital bed, it's a reminder that athlete health comes first—and that every player's journey has its challenges, even off the field.
