Josh Mauro, an eight-year NFL veteran who retired in 2021, has died at age 35.
The former defensive end's family announced the devastating news on social media, revealing he died on April 23 without revealing the cause.
“With many tears and broken hearts, yet anchored in the unshakable certainty that our precious Josh Mauro is now healed and made new — living in the presence of the Lord — we humbly covet your prayers as our family walks through the devastating loss of our amazing son, brother, uncle, grandson and friend,” read a statement posted by his father, Greg Mauro, on Facebook. “Josh breathed his last breath on this earth and his first breath in heaven," the statement continued. "The Lord has been our strength in this unimaginable moment. Your prayers for continued strength and comfort mean more to us than words could ever express."
Mauro, who went undrafted after playing his college ball at Stanford, played his first four NFL seasons for the Arizona Cardinals before spending a season apiece with the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders. He concluded his career back in Phoenix, appearing in eight games (three starts) over the 2020 and 2021 campaigns.
Maxx Crosby and J.J. Watt, who played with Mauro on the Raiders and Cardinals, respectively, shared their condolences on social media. Crosby's video in particular is a must-watch as it's truly a heartfelt tribute.
