Downs is in the final year of his current contract.

The Indianapolis Colts' Josh Downs is entering a pivotal 2026 season, one that promises both family rivalry and professional opportunity. The third-year wide receiver will face his younger brother on the field this fall, but that's just the beginning of what's at stake.

After posting career lows in catches and receiving yards in 2025, Downs sees a clear path forward. "There's probably more opportunities there for me," he said during a Wednesday press conference. With Michael Pittman traded to the Steelers this offseason, Downs and Alec Pierce now stand as the top receiving targets for quarterback Daniel Jones. That's a significant jump in responsibility for a player entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Downs admits the contract situation has crossed his mind, but he's careful not to let it consume him. "Obviously, you think about it a little bit," he said. "At the end of the day, you've got to play football, you've been playing this sport your whole life. I feel like just going out there, putting in the work, and having fun with it."

The young receiver has been seeking wisdom from those who've been there before. "I was talking to [Jonathan Taylor] about it yesterday. JT was telling me 'Don't even think about it, just go out there and play. Keep doing what you're doing.' That's the most important thing, not to think about chasing money. I feel like that's when you lose yourself."

Downs doesn't have to look far for inspiration. Pierce just wrapped up the best season of his career under similar circumstances—entering a contract year with an expanded role—and cashed in with a major payday this offseason. If Downs can follow that blueprint, he could be the next Colts receiver to turn opportunity into a long-term deal.
