NEED TO KNOWJosh Allen's "why" is evolving

The Buffalo Bills quarterback shared his new mindset with reporters on Monday, April 20

Allen and wife Hailee Steinfeld announced on April 2 that they welcomed a baby girl

Josh Allen has not lost his killer instinct since becoming a first-time dad.“That want to win will never change,” the Buffalo Bills quarterback told reporters on Monday, April 20, two weeks into the team's offseason training program. “The why I want to do it has.”That’s because Allen, 29, and wife Hailee Steinfeld announced on April 2 that they welcomed a baby girl.“So why I want to do it is to show my family, to show my daughter how hard you need to work in order to accomplish something so great,” he added. “And as long as I play this game, that’s going to be my mindset.”For the four-time Pro Bowler, last season’s playoff disappointment has given way to optimism — and Allen is ready for all that this year has to offer, including the opportunity to play for a new coach in Joe Brady.Follow your favorite athletes on and off the field with PEOPLE's free sports newsletter — sign up now!

“I think it definitely changes your mindset a little bit. I’m very excited,” Allen said. “And I do think this is going to be the best version of myself in all aspects in my professional career and personal life. It’s such a blessing.”Shortly after the couple announced the arrival of their first child, Steinfeld, 29, and Allen stepped out in support of the Bills quarterback's longtime friend, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, at his wedding to Katie Hoofnagle on Friday, April 3.

"Hailee and Josh were so sweet on the dance floor, clearly having a blast," a source told PEOPLE at the time. For Steinfeld, the event was memorable for many reasons."This was our first time attending a wedding as husband and wife [and mom and dad!] — and everything hit differently," the Sinners star wrote in her Beau Society newsletter last week. Now on the cusp of his 30th birthday, and as the couple transitions back to the East Coast for football season, Allen is seemingly prepared on many fronts.“I’m not too sure on the science of the athletic peak of a male, but I think it’s slightly beyond 30,” said Allen, who turns 30 on May 21. “And then hopefully the dad strength kicks in, right?”
