In a story that could only be written by fate, the 152nd Kentucky Derby delivered a historic family showdown that had racing fans on the edge of their seats. Jose Ortiz, 32, rode the 23-1 longshot Golden Tempo to a nail-biting victory, edging out his older brother Irad, 33, aboard the 5-1 favorite Renegade.
The two brothers, who grew up together in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, learned to ride from the same family members and were mentored by Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr. Their shared journey took them from the same childhood home to the top of American horse racing—but the Kentucky Derby had always been the one trophy that eluded them both.
Down the stretch, Jose and Golden Tempo—who started dead last in the pack—made a breathtaking charge, edging out Irad and Renegade by a nose at the wire. The win was Jose's 11th attempt at the Derby; Irad's was his 10th.
"I want him to win the Derby, of course," Jose said after crossing the finish line. "I know it's his dream as well. But it happened that way. I think he should be happy. His horse ran a very good race. Today's my day and Golden Tempo's day."
The victory also made history: Jose became the first jockey to sweep both the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby in the same year, having won the Oaks just two days prior. Between the two brothers, they now boast five Eclipse Awards, thousands of Grade 1 victories, two Belmont Stakes wins, and a Preakness Stakes victory—but this Derby win will always hold a special place in their family rivalry.
"That's just what we do," Jose once said. "We've always competed, trying to beat each other. It's still fun. We're still very close."
For fans of the sport, this Derby wasn't just about the winner's circle—it was a testament to the power of family, perseverance, and the unbreakable bond between two brothers who turned their shared dream into a historic moment under the Twin Spires.
