As Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 approaches, Brentford FC has stepped up to the plate in a powerful way, bringing together football star Jordan Henderson, TV presenter Roman Kemp, and the club's own sports psychologist Michael Caulfield for an honest, no-holds-barred conversation about mental health.

This special film, part of Brentford's ongoing Talking is the Best Tactic initiative, dives deep into the pressures of professional sport, the courage it takes to be vulnerable, and the simple yet life-changing power of speaking up. It's a reminder that whether you're a Premier League captain or a fan in the stands, mental health challenges don't discriminate.

Henderson opens up about navigating the immense pressure that comes with elite-level football, while Kemp shares his deeply personal story—and how a single conversation didn't just change his life, but saved it. Their chat takes place on one of Brentford's now-iconic benches, originally placed at the training ground by Caulfield to offer players, coaches, and staff a safe, confidential space to talk. This season, the club has expanded that idea across west London, installing benches in local communities to encourage fans and neighbours alike to open up.

Each bench, delivered in partnership with the London Borough of Hounslow, includes clear signposting to professional mental health support services—including crisis resources for those facing a mental health emergency. It's a simple gesture with profound impact, turning a place to sit into a lifeline.

Brentford's commitment doesn't stop there. As one of ten pilot clubs in the Premier League's Together Against Suicide programme, the club is working to break the stigma around suicide and encourage help-seeking behaviours. Through the Brentford FC Community Sports Trust, free monthly drop-ins provide direct access to mental health expertise, while initiatives like BeeActive Football and Comedy for Thought sessions offer supportive, stigma-free spaces for anyone who needs them.

Because sometimes, the best tactic really is just talking.
