Jones: “I Just Want to Go and Play”

The Scouser talks playing right-back and his season so far.

Curtis Jones is making it clear: he just wants to play. In a recent interview with Liverpool FC's official media ahead of the trip to face Aston Villa, the Scouser opened up about his evolving role on the pitch and his mindset this season.

When asked about playing out of position at right-back, Jones didn't hesitate. "I just enjoy playing. If I'm a right-back, a centre-back, or a striker, I just want to go and play," he said. "I'm fortunate enough to have a quality where I'm comfortable on the ball and confident in my own abilities. I'm not shy about where I have to go and play. I want to be in centre-midfield, and I know that I'm good enough and I 'should' be playing there, but it's all about the team—that's what you have to put first."

Jones acknowledged that while he's currently deployed as a full-back, the role comes with its own perks. "Although I'm a full-back now, I'm playing inside as well, so I'm still getting a chance to get in the box and score or assist. I wouldn't say I'm a defender. I'm a full-back/centre-midfielder, you could say. I just enjoy playing. Any time I get a ball at my feet, my eyes light up and I end up with a smile on my face. That's what I want to do, especially at a club like this. If I have to play off the wing, as a striker, or as a centre-half, wherever it is, I'm fine."

Jones also reflected on his overall campaign, which has seen him statistically lead the Premier League in passing accuracy in the opposition half. "It's been up and down, and I think that's been the whole team. I've played a lot of games. Although I'd like to play centre-midfield and have that spot as mine, I've got to appreciate the lads around me and their abilities too. The stats speak for themselves. I've been told I hold onto the ball a lot, but as everyone can see, I don't give it away at the same time. The next step is to take that and try to score more and assist more."

Jones remains a player who divides the fanbase, and he's far from perfect. But his willingness to adapt for the team is a quality every squad needs. Whether he's at right-back or in midfield, one thing is certain: Jones just wants to play, and that passion is exactly what keeps fans watching—and what makes his game-day gear a must-have for any supporter.
