The infielder is making the most of his opportunities when he gets them.

Jonathan Ornelas is proving that patience and preparation pay off. The versatile infielder has appeared in 22 of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' first 32 games this season, and whenever his number is called, he delivers. With a .339 batting average (21-for-62), including two doubles, a triple, two home runs, 10 RBIs, and 15 runs scored, Ornelas has been a consistent offensive spark. He's hit safely in 13 of those 22 games, with six multi-hit performances that keep the lineup humming.

His clutch gene was on full display during last week's series against the Buffalo Bisons. On April 30, Ornelas delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2, then came through again with a walk-off single in the 10th inning to seal a 5-4 victory. It's the kind of poise that makes a player invaluable in close contests.

Defensively, Ornelas is a Swiss Army knife. He's logged 12 games at second base, six at third, and four at shortstop, committing just one error in 73 chances. With 26 putouts, 46 assists, and five double plays turned, he's shown he can handle the dirt no matter where he stands. "I just try to take it day by day whether I'm in the lineup or not," Ornelas said. "Manager Shelley likes to put guys in even when they're not playing, so I know I have to come to the field ready. I could be going in during the seventh or eighth inning to pinch-run, hit, or play defense. Whatever my role is, I have to be prepared every single day."

That mindset has served him well since being drafted in the third round by the Texas Rangers in 2018. He worked his way through the minors and made his MLB debut on August 7, 2023, against the Athletics in Oakland. Entering as a pinch-runner for Mitch Garver in a 3-3 tie, he scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice, helping the Rangers to a 5-3 victory. "It was a nice debut," he recalled. "But the first week and a half to two weeks I was up there, I didn't get an at-bat."

Sent back to Triple-A Round Rock, Ornelas earned another call-up weeks later—and this time, he got his first major league at-bat. On September 9, 2023, with the bases loaded and the score tied 2-2 in the seventh inning against the A's in Arlington, he was called on to pinch-hit. It was a high-pressure moment, but for a player who's always ready, it was just another opportunity to shine.
