Georgia basketball is bringing back a familiar face to the program, as former Bulldog player and assistant coach Jonas Hayes is returning to Athens to join Mike White's staff. This homecoming adds a significant piece to the coaching puzzle as the Bulldogs look to build momentum in the SEC.

Hayes, who previously served as the head coach at Georgia State, is no stranger to Stegeman Coliseum. After a successful playing career for the Bulldogs, he transitioned into coaching, spending five seasons as an assistant under Mark Fox. During that time, he was instrumental in the development of SEC Player of the Year Yante Maten, showcasing his ability to nurture top-tier talent. His coaching journey then took him to Xavier, where he eventually served as interim head coach, before leading his own program at Georgia State.

This move marks a family reunion of sorts on the sidelines. Hayes joins his twin brother, Jarvis, who was also recently announced as an assistant coach under Mike White. The hiring of Jonas fills a vacancy created when assistant Anthony Goins departed for N.C. State after this past season.

Notably, Hayes was a candidate for Georgia's head coaching position before Mike White was hired, underscoring his deep connection to the university. In a statement, Hayes expressed his profound enthusiasm for returning, saying, "Georgia is home. This place helped shape me as a man, as a player, and as a coach. Having the opportunity to return means everything to me." He also praised White, stating, "I've respected and admired Coach White for quite some time... I'm incredibly grateful to Coach White for trusting me to be part of what he's building at my alma mater."

Head Coach Mike White reciprocated the excitement, highlighting Hayes's passion for the program. "His love for the state of Georgia, UGA, the Athens community and Georgia Basketball is palpable," White said. "I'm confident he will make an immediate and sustained impact as our program continues to grow."

For Bulldog fans and players alike, the return of Jonas Hayes brings a wealth of experience, proven player development skills, and an undeniable passion for Georgia basketball. His reunion with his brother and integration into White's vision creates a compelling storyline for the program's future.
