Miami Dolphins’ offensive lineman will return to the right side of the formation in 2026.

For Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea, the 2026 season is shaping up to be a pivotal opportunity for redemption. After being selected 37th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Arizona, Savaiinaea was expected to shore up a Dolphins offensive line that had struggled to protect its quarterbacks in recent years. Instead, the rookie started all 17 games at left guard but ranked dead last—81st out of 81 qualifying guards—according to Pro Football Focus, contributing to the very issues he was brought in to fix.

Now, with the Dolphins using the 12th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Kadyn Proctor, the team's new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has already signaled that Proctor will get the starting nod at left guard. That left Savaiinaea without a clear role—until now.

On Tuesday, new Dolphins offensive line coach Zach Yenser confirmed the shift: Savaiinaea will move to right guard for the 2026 season. "I think he’s going to be better and have more confidence switching back over to the right side," Yenser told South Florida media. "He has a lot of built-up reps on the right side. That was a big part of the whole draft process too. That was a conversation we had with Jonah when we first got here—like, hey man, you played on the right side in college. He was excited to be able to have an opportunity if we drafted the right guy to move back over."

Rookie struggles are common in the NFL, and Savaiinaea's 2025 campaign was a tough learning curve. But the move back to his natural position—where he excelled at Arizona—could be the reset he needs. With a new coaching staff in place and a fresh start on the right side, Savaiinaea has a clear path to earn a starting job and prove he belongs. For Dolphins fans, the hope is that this change in scenery—and side of the line—will unlock the potential that made him a second-round pick in the first place.
