Promise kept. That's the story of Jonah Coleman, the newest running back for the Denver Broncos, who made good on a vow to his grandmother long before he heard his name called in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Coleman's journey is about more than just football. It's about family, determination, and the power of a promise. "Just being the first in my family to go to college, and then the first in my family to graduate is something that I take pride in," Coleman shared after being drafted. "Just being able to walk around with that and know that I did that ultimately for my grandma, who I did make a promise to that I was going to graduate and get my college degree. Just being able to be the first in my family to do that is something that means a lot to me."
But Coleman didn't just graduate—he excelled. He became a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, widely known as the Academic Heisman, an honor reserved for college football's best scholar-athlete. He earned his degree in education from the University of Washington, proving that hard work in the classroom is just as important as it is on the field.
Coleman credits his academic success to careful planning and a dedicated support system. "Just going through that whole process, the academic staff and working with them and having a plan mapped out that ultimately helped me graduate early and stuff before I went to the NFL," he explained. "That also did play a part in why I came back for my senior season at Washington."
That senior season turned out to be his best yet. Coleman posted a career-high 17 touchdowns from scrimmage, showcasing not only his physical growth but also a deeper understanding of the game—a lesson he carried from his studies to the gridiron.
For athletes and fans alike, Coleman's story is a powerful reminder that true success is built on discipline, education, and keeping the promises that matter most. Whether you're chasing a degree or a championship, it all starts with a plan—and the grit to see it through.
Coleman will join his fellow draftees at Denver's rookie minicamp this week, from May 8-10, ready to take the next step in a journey that's already a winning one.
