After being picked by the Denver Broncos in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL draft last week, running back Jonah Coleman will have to pick a new jersey number — or strike a deal with one of his new teammates for one of his old numbers.

Coleman wore No. 1 with the Washington Huskies from 2024-2025. That number is currently worn in Denver by veteran tight end Evan Engram, who picked that number when he joined the Broncos because his old No. 17 was not available. Engram's probably not switching back to No. 17 because that number now belongs to new wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.

So, unless Coleman can strike a deal with Engram and convince the tight end to change numbers again, the rookie running back won't be able to wear No. 1 this season. Before transferring to Washington, Coleman previously wore No. 3 (2023) and No. 24 (2022) at Arizona. No. 3 is currently owned by kicker Wil Lutz, and the Broncos hold back No. 24 in honor of Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Champ Bailey.

Coleman wore Nos. 2, 3 and 33 in high school. No. 2, of course, belongs to All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain, and Lutz wears No. 3. Cornerback Jaden Robinson, who spent last season on Denver's practice squad, currently wears No. 33. Not including Bailey's old number, Coleman's options (without striking a deal with a teammate) include Nos. 5, 6, 20, 26 and 30.

It's also worth noting that RJ Harvey hinted at wearing No. 5 as a rookie, but it wasn't available then. So we could see some veterans changing numbers as well, and that would create new numbers becoming available for rookies. Coleman is set to report to the team's facility for rookie minicamp next month, and we should get jersey number news then.
