Jon Sumrall is on an absolute tear on the recruiting trail, and his latest catch comes with one of the best nicknames in college football. The Florida Gators have secured a commitment from defensive lineman Cain Van Norden—affectionately known as "Big Sandwich." And honestly, is there a cooler moniker out there?
Van Norden, a Class of 2027 prospect, announced his decision on Friday, choosing the Gators over Georgia, Ole Miss, and Maryland. Standing at a massive 6-foot-7 and 285 pounds, the Bishop McNamara product from District Heights, Maryland, brings the kind of size that immediately turns heads. Ranked as the 53rd-best defensive lineman in the nation, he's still relatively new to football, which makes his raw athletic ceiling even more exciting for Florida fans.
This commitment continues a hot streak for head coach Jon Sumrall and defensive coordinator Brad White. They've been laser-focused on landing high-upside, undervalued athletes—and Van Norden fits that mold perfectly. His versatility means he could line up at multiple spots along the defensive front, with the 5T position (similar to how Caleb Banks was used) being a likely home, though he has the flexibility to slide up and down the line as needed.
With Van Norden on board, Sumrall now has 15 recruits committed to the Gators—a significant jump from what Billy Napier had at this point last year. It's a clear signal that Sumrall is building the program through high school talent. The current commit list includes three-star defensive lineman Stive-Bentley Keumajou Yondui, among other promising prospects. For Florida fans, the "Big Sandwich" era is just getting started, and it's already looking delicious.
