Johnson Wagner has insisted that the field should be very scared of Rory McIlroy at the PGA Championship despite the Northern Irishman failing to contend at the Truist Championship this past week. McIlroy marked his first start since his second Masters victory by finishing tied for 19th at Quail Hollow.

Johnson Wagner has a warning for the entire field ahead of the PGA Championship: be very, very scared of Rory McIlroy. Despite a so-so showing at the Truist Championship this past week—where McIlroy finished tied for 19th in his first start since winning his second Masters title—Wagner believes the Northern Irishman is primed for greatness.

Sure, Quail Hollow has historically been kind to McIlroy, so it raised some eyebrows when he stumbled during Saturday's third round. But here's the thing: he bounced back in style on Sunday, carding a blistering 67 to sneak inside the top 20. And for Wagner, that comeback was just the appetizer.

Speaking on Scorecard after the Truist Championship wrapped up, Wagner couldn't stop raving about what he saw from McIlroy on the practice ground. "I think you're going to see Rory at the top of his game," Wagner said. "We're finally going to get a Rory-Scottie battle." He went on to describe some jaw-dropping practice shots—flop shots off tight fairway grass, chips that looked destined for the cup. "He holed like three chips in about 20 shots. Every other one looked like it was going to go in. I think he's primed and ready."

Wagner's confidence isn't just about the short game, either. He pointed to McIlroy's mindset after the Masters, where the 37-year-old admitted he once thought the Grand Slam was the summit, but now sees it as just another step. "Man, I'd be scared if I was playing at the PGA because Rory's coming," Wagner added.

Sure, McIlroy's third-round struggles at Quail Hollow were statistically one of the worst rounds of his entire PGA Tour career—especially around the greens and with approach play. But Wagner and plenty of others are willing to write that off as a blip. With his game trending in the right direction and a third PGA Championship title in his sights, McIlroy looks ready to make some noise at the second major of the year.
